Life Skills

Career education and life skills training assist students of all ages in acquiring basic skills required to successfully make the transition to the work place and the community at large. Students gain independence in the kitchen, learn to do laundry and housekeeping tasks, and they can work cooperatively with their teachers on functional academics, i.e., measuring liquids, solids, and temperature and viewing the practical application of electricity.

Transition Planning
Transition and Behavioral Services are provided by TCI and consist of a coordinated set of activities for a pupil with educational disabilities, designed with an outcome-oriented process. These service promote movement from school to post-school activities, including post secondary education, vocational training, integrated employment, continuing and adult education, adult services independent living, or community participation.

For pupils, age 14 and over, or younger, if deemed appropriate, annual goals and objectives are related to the post-secondary outcomes. Transition services are based on the student's needs, taking into account the pupil's preferences and interests and include:
  • Instruction
  • Community experiences
  • The development of employment and other post-school adult living objectives.
  • If appropriate, the acquisition of daily living skills and functional evaluation.


A Transition Coordinator at TCI in responsible for the student's transition planning, and will write an Individualized Education Program for this transition to adulthood.

TCI has a fully-equipped life skills apartment that enables students to gain practical living skills.
